Those numbers are serial dates — the way Excel stores dates behind the scenes. This guide explains how they work, how to convert them back to dates instantly with the free Excel Serial Date Converter, and how to fix the display in Excel itself.

If you work with CSV files or system exports, you run into these numbers all the time. I built this tool for the moments when you just want to know “what date is this?” without opening Excel.

What is an Excel serial date?

Excel stores every date as a count of days, starting from January 1, 1900 = 1. January 2, 1900 is 2; January 1, 2024 is 45292. When a cell is formatted as a date, you see “1/1/2024.” When it’s formatted as General or Number, you see the raw count.

Times are stored as the fractional part of a day. Noon is 0.5 and 6 PM is 0.75, so 45292.75 means January 1, 2024 at 6:00 PM.

Common serial numbers and their dates

  • 45292 → January 1, 2024
  • 45829 → June 21, 2025
  • 46000 → December 9, 2025
  • 46293 → September 28, 2026

As a rough guide, numbers in the 45,000s fall around 2023–2025, and numbers in the 46,000s around 2025–2028.

What this tool does

  • Converts a serial number to a date (and time)
  • Converts a date and time back to a serial number
  • Handles decimals down to the second
  • Runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere

How to use it

Step 1. Open the tool

Open the Excel Serial Date Converter. The top section converts serial numbers to dates; the bottom section works the other way around.

Step 2. Enter the serial number

Type the number from your spreadsheet into the “Serial number → date” field. The date appears as you type — there’s no button to press. If the number has a decimal, you’ll see the time as well.

The decimal part is the time of day: .75 means 6:00 PM

Step 3. Convert a date to a serial number

Need the number instead — for a formula, a filter, or a system import? Pick a date (and optionally a time) in the “Date → serial number” section to get the matching serial value.

Step 4. Fix the display in Excel (optional)

To turn the numbers back into dates inside Excel:

  1. Select the cells (or the whole column) showing numbers
  2. Right-click and choose Format Cells (Ctrl+1 on Windows, Cmd+1 on Mac)
  3. On the Number tab, choose Date, pick a format, and click OK

To get the date as text in another cell, you can also use a formula such as =TEXT(A1,"yyyy-mm-dd").

When you’re checking a CSV on your phone or on a machine without Excel, pasting the number into the tool is usually the fastest way to read it.

When this comes in handy

  • Reading CSV and system exports: see what date a numeric column actually represents
  • Working with Excel files in code: check that the numeric values your script reads match the expected dates
  • Writing formulas and filters: find the serial value for a cutoff date
  • Reviewing files from others: read dates even when the formatting has been lost

FAQ

Why does Excel store dates as numbers?

Storing dates as a running count makes date math easy: subtracting two dates gives the number of days between them, and sorting works naturally. The date format is only how the number is displayed.

Do Google Sheets and Excel use the same serial numbers?

Yes, for any date on or after March 1, 1900. Earlier dates can differ by one day, because Excel counts a February 29, 1900 that never existed (a bug kept for compatibility with Lotus 1-2-3).

How do I convert a serial date in code?

To get a Unix timestamp (seconds since January 1, 1970), use (serial − 25569) × 86400 — 25569 is the serial number for January 1, 1970. You can check the result with the Unix Timestamp Converter. Note that this formula treats the value as UTC and doesn’t account for time zones.

Things to watch out for

  • Older Mac workbooks: files that use the “1904 date system” are offset by 1,462 days (about four years). If your converted dates are four years off, this setting is the likely cause
  • Dates before March 1, 1900: Excel’s values in this range don’t match other software. Everyday business dates aren’t affected
  • Dates stored as text: cells where “2024-01-01” was entered as text won’t change when you apply a date format — they need to be re-entered as real dates

Summary

A number like 45292 in Excel is a serial date. Paste it into the converter to see the date instantly, or change the cell format to Date to fix it in Excel.

Next time a CSV export shows a column of five-digit numbers, you’ll know exactly what you’re looking at.
