You pasted a logo, a handwritten signature or a stamp into a document or slide — and the white background came along with it. The fix is to turn the image into a transparent PNG, so it sits cleanly on any color.
This guide shows you how to make a white (or any solid-color) background transparent with the free Solid-Color Background Remover.
Removing a plain white background is too small a job to open an image editor for. I built this so I could get it done in the browser in a few seconds.
What is a transparent PNG?
It’s an image that can contain “empty”, see-through areas. With a transparent background, whatever is underneath — a colored slide, a web page, a pattern — shows through when you place the image on top.
The common JPEG format can’t store transparency at all, so images with a transparent background need to be saved as PNG. This tool saves your results as PNG for that reason.
What this tool does
- Makes a solid-color background transparent — white, a green screen, and so on
- Lets you click the image to pick the color to remove
- Lets you adjust how wide a range of colors is removed and how soft the edges are
- Processes several images with the same background at once, with a ZIP download
- Works entirely in your browser — your images are never uploaded
How to use it
Step 1. Choose your images
Open the Solid-Color Background Remover and choose the images you want to work on. When an image loads, the color in its corners is picked automatically as the color to remove.
Step 2. Check the color being removed
If the background turns into a checkerboard pattern in the preview — the usual way of showing transparency — the right color was picked. If not, click the part of the preview you want to make transparent to pick it again.
The checkerboard pattern shows the transparent background
Step 3. Fine-tune the result
If patches of the background remain, increase Tolerance. If parts of the subject are disappearing, lower it. If the edges look jagged, raise Edge softness so they blend in more naturally.

Step 4. Save as PNG
For a single image, click Save this preview as PNG. To process several images with the same settings, click Apply to all & download ZIP.
Photos of a stamp or signature on paper often have an uneven white. Shoot straight down in good light and set Tolerance a little higher, and the background comes out cleanly.
When this comes in handy
- Using a logo in documents: place a white-background logo on colored slides or flyers
- Adding a signature or stamp: photograph your signature on paper and place it on a PDF or Word document
- Cleaning up product photos: put products shot on white into a banner for your online store
- Making artwork and stickers: turn a drawing on white paper into a background-free image
FAQ
Can it cut out a person from a photo?
No. This tool simply makes colors close to the one you pick transparent. It doesn’t detect people or objects (AI background removal). To cut a subject out of a busy background, use the automatic selection tools in an image editor.
What happens if I save the result as a JPEG?
JPEG can’t store transparency, so the transparent areas get filled with white or black. Keep the image as a PNG to keep it transparent. If you need a smaller file, you can convert it to WebP, which also supports transparency, with the Image Format Converter.
What if my image has a lot of empty space around it?
Large margins make the image awkward to position once you place it. Remove them first with Auto-Trim Image Margins, then make the background transparent.
Things to watch out for
- Parts of the subject that match the background become transparent too: for a logo with white lettering on a white background, lower Tolerance and adjust carefully
- Handle signature and stamp images with care: a transparent signature can be misused to impersonate you, so be careful where you store and share it
- Batch processing uses the same settings for every image: if the background color differs between images, process them one at a time
Summary
For solid-color backgrounds, just click to pick the color and you get a transparent PNG. It’s a quick way to place logos, signatures and product photos on documents and web pages without opening an image editor.
Start with a logo you have on hand and see how cleanly the white background disappears.
