PNG is lossless and supports transparency — best for diagrams, logos and screenshots. JPEG is best for photos and opens everywhere. WebP is even smaller than JPEG at the same quality and is ideal for the web, though some older software cannot open it. When a transparent PNG is converted to JPEG, transparent areas become white (JPEG cannot store transparency).
