HEIC (High Efficiency Image Format) has been the default photo format on iPhone since 2017. It offers smaller files at higher quality than JPEG, but Windows PCs, some web services, and older software often can't open or accept it. If a photo taken on an iPhone won't open on a work computer, or a website rejects the upload with a format error, converting to JPEG or PNG solves it.
This tool uses an open-source HEIC decoder (libheif) running directly inside your browser. The conversion engine is downloaded from a distribution site the first time you use it, but your photos themselves are never uploaded anywhere.
JPEG is the right choice for most photos. Like HEIC, it's a "trade a little quality for a smaller file" format, so it tends to stay close to your original HEIC's file size, and you can adjust the quality slider to control that further. It also opens everywhere.
Be aware that PNG produces much larger files. PNG is lossless, so image quality is fully preserved, but it compresses photographic content (with lots of colors) poorly — it's not unusual for a 2MB HEIC photo to become 15-20MB (roughly 10×) once converted to PNG. This isn't a bug in this tool; it's simply how PNG behaves. Reserve PNG for cases where you need transparency or zero quality loss (logos, screenshots) — for ordinary photos, JPEG keeps file sizes far more manageable.
