Use 3:4 to make nine posts form one picture on your profile grid. For a 3-across panorama posted as a carousel, 4:5 or square works best. The numbers on the preview show the posting order.
Instagram's profile grid adds each new post to the top-left, pushing everything else down and to the right. To end up with the full picture reading correctly, you need to post the bottom-right piece first and the top-left piece last. This tool bakes that order into the filenames (01 first, 09 last), so you just upload in filename order.
The center crop matches the overall ratio set by your pattern and piece shape (3×3 with 3:4 pieces is 3:4 overall; 3 across with 4:5 pieces is 12:5) — note that this trims the top/bottom or left/right of your original image.
Since January 2025, Instagram shows profile grid thumbnails as portrait 3:4 rectangles instead of squares. Whatever the original ratio, each post is cropped to 3:4 in the grid view.
That means square pieces get their left and right edges trimmed, and the seams between the nine pieces no longer line up. Choosing "Portrait 3:4" exports each piece at 1080×1440px, matching the grid tiles exactly so the picture joins up cleanly.
The 3-across pattern is typically posted as a carousel — one post you swipe through — to show a panorama. In a carousel, the first image's ratio applies to every slide, so all three pieces need the same shape (the tool handles this automatically).
Portrait 4:5 (1080×1350px) takes up the most space in the feed, so even a wide landscape has presence. Square is the safe choice that looks the same everywhere.
