Counting rules
Characters are counted per Unicode code point, so emoji count as one character. Words are separated by whitespace, which is the standard rule for English and most Western languages. The byte count uses UTF-8 — useful when a database field or API limit is defined in bytes, where accented characters take 2 bytes and most emoji take 4.
